Prep your house for the summer months with these great tips!

Summer cleaning tips

With spring coming to a close – and the temperatures begin to rise – the heat will likely change the way you clean this summer. Follow these five summer cleaning tips to help you beat the heat.

Maintain Your Air Conditioner

An air conditioner will likely become your new best friend during the summer months, so maintaining your unit should be a top priority. Over time, the filters in air conditioners will collect dust and other debris, limiting their effectiveness.

Wash your filters with a mixture of a mild dish detergent and warm water. If you have a condenser outside, make sure to shut down your electric panel before cleaning out any trapped debris. You can also use a vacuum cleaner to take care of dust trapped in the hard-to-reach places of your unit.

Prep Your Windows

Spend time in the morning to focus on window cleaning. You may not have been able to clean your windows during winter or spring due to the weather, but a nice cloudy morning is perfect to get started.

While simply using a window cleaning solution would do the trick, using soapy water and a sponge is more effective at removing dirt, especially if you haven’t cleaned your windows in a while! It’s important to clean your windows before it gets too hot because the heat could dry out your solution too quickly and will leave streaks.

Inspect Your Gutters

Summer cleaning takes place indoors and outdoors. If you are in an area where it rains often, your gutters and drains may have collected an assortment of leaves and gunk over the winter and spring. It is dangerous to leave these areas untouched because a clogged drain or gutter can lead to water damage in the form of a leaky wall or ceiling.

Find the method that works best for you. There are many tools on the market to help you clean this hard-to-reach area outside your home.

Eliminate Stinky Garbage

Food is prone to rot faster thanks to the summer heat. Now is a good time to start practicing better habits when it comes to dealing with your garbage.

This can turn into a very stinky situation fast. A good solution involves sprinkling a bit of baking soda at the bottom of your trash cans. This actually absorbs foul odors rather than simply covering them up. If your garbage bins have already developed a sticky residue from the rotting food, use a mixture of vinegar and water to rinse out your bin, and let it air dry in the sun.

In addition to your garbage cans, another area to pay attention to is your garbage disposal. Your disposal can trap food debris if not maintained properly. Try pouring a mixture of baking soda and vinegar down the drain and following up with boiling water after 5 minutes.

Prepare For Pests

The warm weather can, unfortunately, attract unwanted insects and pests. An easy way to combat pests is to make it a habit to wipe down the countertops, flat surfaces, and sweep floors often to make sure there are no crumbs lingering around.

Leave bug traps in the corners of your house that you have seen insects occupy before. If you prefer to air out your house naturally, installing screen filters for your windows is a nice way to keep insects out while still letting the cool summer breeze in as well.
